Sick? Your medicine might not be readily available for purchase.
Honestly, after spending a week in bed with a sinus/respiratory infection, I am in a mood to be slightly crabby and knowing it is becoming more difficult to obtain pseudoephedrine than ever is a good reason for me to be crabby. In addition to an antibiotic, I have been on a decongestant - pseudoephedrine – and antihistamine most of this week. I was unable to purchase my medicine after pharmacy hours although until recently it was available anywhere anytime and had to wait for the pharmacy to open. Forget it if you get sick over a holiday when most pharmacies are closed. This irks me to no end. People make the choice to get involved in dangerous drugs and instead of law enforcement personnel dealing with the criminals, all of us are punished by severe restrictions, including mandatory displays of photo ID before purchase and electronic tracking of our purchases. However, certain groups are pushing for Plan B - emergency contraception - to be sold without a prescription to adults and minors without the consent of their parents. I am sure if someone said they had to produce photo ID to make their purchase and all purchases had to be electronically monitored someone would raise a ruckus. Maybe all these drugs are clouding my mind, but this makes absolutely no sense to me. It is not an infringement of my constitutional rights to require a photo ID to purchase a drug was approved for over the counter sales without restrictions and when used properly helps people get well, but while we legalize emergency contraception? HUH?
Recently enacted SC state law
A bill to amend the code of Laws of South Carolina, 1976, by adding section 44-53-271 so as to require that over the counter drugs containing pseudoephedrine must be dispensed by a licensed pharmacist or a licensed pharmacy technician and to provide a procedure for the sale of these drugs,… to amend section 44-53-270, relating to schedule V controlled substances so as to include any compound, mixture, or preparation containing any detectable quantity of pseudoephedrine except those sold in liquid, liquid capsule, or gel capsule form if pseudoephedrine is not the only active ingredient
Although I disagree with this legal maneuver for a variety of reasons, I can accept a state action, but I have major issues with federal intervention especially when it includes electronic tracking of purchases. I have an extremely hard time believing a less intrusive method to end the manufacturing of meth does not exist - I wonder if this is partly laziness on the part of the state and law enforcement personnel to deal with the situation properly.
